Nicola Whelan

Nicola graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the University of Otago and was admitted to the Bar in 2009.

Nicola joined Fyfe Karamaena Law in April 2026, bringing with her a distinctive combination of legal, creative, and business experience. She offers a strong commercial mindset, a keen eye for detail, and a people-focused approach to her work.

Her areas of practice include residential and commercial property transactions, commercial leasing, relationship property, trusts, wills, and enduring powers of attorney.

Nicola began her legal career in Wellington, specialising in leaky home litigation, before moving to Perth where she practised in workers’ compensation and personal injury law. Drawn to creative pursuits, she later stepped away from legal practice to study contemporary jewellery design. In 2017, Nicola and her husband moved to Wānaka, where she established her own jewellery business before later working as Marketing Manager for a luxury jewellery brand. She has now come full circle and returned to work in law.

Alongside raising her young family, Nicola also manages the accounts and wider operations for her husband’s electrical business. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, art, travel, and exploring the outdoors.
